Strategies for Reading Comprehension

Important Announcements!

  • Thank You!: What an awesome Halloween Party! Thank you to everyone who

provided supplies and help for the Halloween breakfast on Friday. The students loved it and we received lots of positive feedback from parents. We couldn't have done it without all of the help from parents (and grandparents!)!

  • Candy for Deployed Troops: Candy is on sale! Now that Halloween candy is on sale, consider picking up a bag or two for the Veteran's Day Candy Collection for the Troops. WES will be sending what we hope will be boxes of candy to troops deployed in Qatar. The request for candy comes from the York VFW which is in contact with the deployed troops. Two years ago WES sent more than 150 care packages to the men and women deployed in Afghanistan.

  • Conferences: Conferences are on Wednesday and Thursday. Students are encouraged to attend with their parents!

Strategies for Reading

When we teach children to read it is more than just helping them read the words. Students have to learn strategies for understanding what they read. This week we began looking at character traits and how understanding the characters in a story can help understand what is happening.

  • One awesome observation a student made is that knowing about a character can help you make predictions about what is going to happen!

Two weeks abo Mr. K and I attended a technology conference where we learned about a neat resource called Nearpod. We can create interactive lessons that can be used as a whole class or individually. What is also really neat is that we can also share the lessons with parents!

Here is a two-part lesson I will be sharing with your children next week. Part 1 will be done as a class and part 2 individually. Go ahead and take a look.

  • Click on log in

  • Click on join and type in the code

  • When you log in, be sure to use your name so when I get the quiz results and such, I will know it is not a student!

  • You can go through the lesson just as your children will.

  • Part 1 code: XTNID

  • Part 2 code: WXSTF

I would love to hear your feedback!
