Math Update from Mr. K

Homework:

  • Please check the "Math Links" section of our class Portaportal: http://guest.portaportal.com/cryerkafkas

  • Each week, I will put a link at the portal to an "electronic copy" of the math homework for that week (clicking on the link will automatically download the homework to your computer/device in a pdf format). Math homework will not always be "paper and pencil", but when it is you may find this "electronic copy" of the homework helpful if your child is absent or on that (hopefully rare) occasion where they forget the homework at school.

Math Task/Activity: SHAKE, RATTLE and ROLL

The purpose of this lesson is to strengthen skills of place value (by creating "least and greatest" numbers) and rounding to the nearest 100 (as a way to estimate). Students also use mental math skills by adding multiples of 100 together in their heads. The game requires 3 dice, a recording sheet and a partner. As part of their homework this week, I've asked students to play this game with someone at home. This would be a good opportunity for discussion about the math skills required in the game and to help students practice explaining their math thinking out loud to others. NOTE: for homework, I lent 3 dice to some students and would like to have those dice brought back to school by Friday. Thanks!

Khan Academy:

One site that students now have access to is https://www.khanacademy.org/login. This site provides guided/supported practice with 3rd grade math skills. Since they each have individual accounts, I can track and modify what skills they are exposed to on the site. Helpful tutorial videos provide new information and on-screen problem solving is interactive and changes in difficulty as students master skills. NOTE: students can access this site using their "google accounts". They have done this at school, but if they need help doing this at home just let me know. -Mr. K

Overview from Khan Academy Founder:

The next video provides an overview of how the "math missions" work on Khan Academy. Students will use the site to strengthen areas where they may be struggling and challenge themselves to learn new concepts. The site individualizes/adapts to student needs and provides immediate feedback on their progress.
